As an ILR holder I am sure you understand you will require a visa to move to Spain as an Indian national due to Spain being apart of the Schengen visa system. The easiest way to overcome your immigration issues would be to apply & successfully acquire UK Citizenship first, obviously with such a move you would also more than likely have to give up your Indian citizenship since your country does not recognize dual citizenship.

Do you need to speak Spanish to live and work in Barcelona, Spain

Do you need to speak Spanish to live and work in Barcelona, Spain?
Is the knowledge of Spanish required to live and work in Barcelona, Spain? I speak fluent English and fluent French. Yes I am serious. In some countries there are very solid expat communities that allow one's to live in the country without necessarily speak the local language. I do it all the time, and I work for English-speaking companies wherever I go.

No, it's probably better if you can't communicate there. Are you serious?
2 :
Of course, it is absolutely necessary... do you think it is necessary to speak french if you go work in France??

I´m British and I live in Spain and I believe as you are a guest living in someone elses country then you should learn the language. I´m learning Spanish because I want to integrate.

You should contact the Spanish embassy in your country of origin. They will give you all the advice you need. If you were from another European country there would be no problem, but as you are not you will need to get a work permit to come here. Jobs are getting hard to find in the current economic crisis. Any work going may go to Spanish Nationals.
2 :
Digame says the same thing I've been hearing about the economy. He is right about the EU. If you are not from Europe, and one of the countries in the Schengen agreement, then you need to get a work visa. Apart from that (which can be difficult to get) any foreigner needs to comply with the massive red tape, which changes frequently, and the residence requirements. It can be daunting. Get everything in line, and be prepared to work hard, and it should be worth it. It's a wonderful place to live, if you can make a living! You'll be best off if you are prepared.

Will my debit card work in Spain

Will my debit card work in Spain?
I am leaving for spain in 7 days, I wont to know if my debit card is going to work in their ATMs. The symbols on the back are NYCE, MasterCard and STAR. My list says its need to have a CIRRUS on the back, but will it still work without that?
Other - Spain - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
i dont know but the real question is... WILL IT WORK ON MARS?!
2 :
If the list says CIRRUS then that is what you should have. Most banks charge for withdrawing in international places so you need to check with your bank on that as well.
3 :
my debit card worked (in france anyway) and mine does not have CIRRUS on it.
4 :
I've found debit cards work OK in ATM machines in Europe. Actually that's a great way to get local currency without paying outrageous exchange rates. Beware of add-on fees from your bank however. If you do lots of small transactions you may find you get hit with a lot of fees. What doesn't seem to work is to use it as a credit card. I have been unable to use my card in train ticket vending machines or in purchasing online from some European websites. There's some difference between US and European Visa and Mastercards that prevents US cards from being recognized. My bank was completely unhelpful on this. They assured me there couldn't possibly be such a problem.
5 :
If it needs to have CIrrus.. then it needs to have cirrus. Look into a VISA or AMEX cash card and load it with $$.
6 :
It should. The best place to ask this question, though, is the bank that issued it. They can also tell you how much the fees are that THEY will charge you. And, if you get to an ATM that ONLY has a cirrus logo, (then you probably ARE on Mars) then you need a Cirrus card. When you get to an ATM in Spain, there will be about twenty different logos. I know you can use a PLUS card at many. If it says Mastercard, you shouldn't have any problems. I do believe that STAR is accepted there, as well. Again...YOUR bank is the place to start on that question.
7 :
my master card worked in America and works in spain were i live but its a british card debit cards are normally cheaper to use than credit cards but they all charge for withdrawals in another country
8 :
Call your bank and tell them about it.
9 :
Call your bank and ask them about using the card internationally. A word to the wise: You might want to take an extra debit card or credit card with you. When I was in Mexico I only had one bank card, and the ATM ate my card and I finally got it replaced, but it caused a lot of hassles for me. If you have time, get an extra bank card... if not, try to avoid the ATMs where you have to insert your card inside the machine. Try to use the ATMs where you have to swipe it instead.

Can someone travel to the states with a work visa in spain

Can someone travel to the states with a work visa in spain?
I have someone that i love dearly in Spain. He's from Dominican Republic I met him in Spain and he has a work visa. He says he can't travel outside europe. IS there a way he can come here just to visit?
Other - Spain - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Ummm. NO. A work visa for Spain is for Spain, not for the US. To come to the US he needs a visa for the US. Each country issues such papers for their own country, not for the whole world. He knows what he's talking about.
2 :
He must apply for a B-2 tourist visa.He can use the site below and follow directions there. It will not be easy, as the U.S. is very strict about giving tourist visas. It would be far easier for you to visit there, since you do not need a visa.
3 :
To visit you in the U.S. the following is required: 1. Completion by him of a US Visa application. 2. Letter of invitation from you guaranteeing your financial support of him in the US and that he will be living with you for the period. 3. Without your invitation he must have proof of funds to enter the US as a tourist - and he must provide evidence of which hotel he is booked into and details of his travel itinerary. 4. He will also require prepaid flight tickets for his entry and exit flights. There is absolutely no guarantee that he will be given a visa. It is not so easy to get into the US anymore. Dependant on where he is living in Spain I have included a list of US offices where he can get information. I hope this is helpful. how does renting property in Spain work

how does renting property in Spain work?
The areas I'm looking at are Andalucian cities, Estepona, Las Palmas or Barcelona

1 :
You go to a real estate agent, You find a place you like. You negotiate if you think they are flexible. You sign a lease. You pay your rent, and move in. (1 month security deposit is normal).
2 :
You may choose to do this privately or through an Agent. If you choose to do it privately you will be well advised to ensure that all aspects of the terms and contract are fully legal, as many people choose to do this on a a "cash" basis. On the other hand some Agents all charge a finders fee to both the Tenant and Landlord for their services. Here is a link that may be of some interest to you - http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/30-property-rental-the-tennant.html
3 :
As landlord or tennant? Either way, it is easy. Most rents ask for three months rent up front. Two months deposit (which is very difficult to get back) and one (or two ) month's rent in advance. Personally I would only give one month's rent as a deposit or go else where. Short term rental agreements are very simple and easy to understand. Always take local advice. Avoid any agency that has not got lots of years in the business. API agencies are the only ones to deal with if you have no local knowledge and cannot read the Spanish contract yourself.
4 :
When I first looked into renting in Spain, I was quite surprised to discover the huge percentage of rental property available furnished. I was also surprised at the cost-per-square-foot, and the average age of both property and furnishings, but most surprising was the 'three-months-up-front' that most landlords demanded. One for the security-deposit, one for the first month, and one for the realtor. Given the difficulty to evict tenants (okupas) in Spain, it may be understandable, but you are likely to find a better deal if you can find a rental property without an agent, and if you provide yourself enough time to negotiate. Especially nowadays, negotiate.

How can I from the USA get a work visa for Spain? Please reply?
Im finishing my nursing career next year and have always contemplated moving to Spain. I have a few close friends that moved over there and I do speak fluently in Spanish and English. I know for a 90 day visit a visa is not required in my case, but I would like to stay longer and work over there. I couldn't find much information about obtaining a work visa or permit, so any valid information you have or went through yourself can help. Thanks!

This website should be at least 90% of the info you need. There are a number of ads on the page, but all you need to do is scroll past them... What you need is this: " Information and guide to getting a work visa in Spain. There is no “working holiday visa” like there is in Japan for instance. No, Spain is a part of the EU, and as such carries the same process and requirements as for the rest of the Schengen countries’ work visas. Spain also has fairly a fairly high unemployment rate, making your work visa very difficult to get. See Working in Spain, Being Autonomo for more about working in Spain; also see the super-comprehensive jobs in Spain list. Note that the Ministry of Public Administration has recently created a new system for those who already have work visas to renew their visa online. This system can be found here. The following is the best guide to the process of gaining a legal work visa for non-European passport holders that we’ve been able to put together. As with most information about the bureaucracies of Spain, it’s only a guide in your efforts toward a work visa. We wish you the best of luck with this. Please note that there is no legal right nor any guarantee to a work visa /permit. 1. Attend interviews with the desired company of employment, with the intention of being selected. 2. Submit ALL the following documents to the Subdelegación del Gobierno in the city you are trying to move to and work in. (Note that this involves many hours in queues or, alternatively, contracting a Spanish Lawyer): * Official application form (EX-1), signed and stamped by EMPLOYER. * 3 passport photos (not high-gloss) * Photocopy and original of passport (must be valid for duration of work-term) * Official job offer form (EX-5), signed and stamped by EMPLOYER. The job offered must be full-time and 10 months or longer * Original official company fiscal identity document (CIF) * Original official company social security inscription document, as well as documents TC-1 and TC-2. * Certified originals from the Tesoreria General de la Seguridad Social and the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria proving that the company is fully up to date in its tax and social security payments. * Official certification that the job on offer has already been advertised in the official Provincial Unemployment Office and that no suitable European candidate has applied. * Document describing the services offered by the company and why a non-European should be employed to work there. * Original and photocopies of degree transcripts/certifications and credentials, with the official seal of convalidatation of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture (Madrid) 3. Make an appointment with the Spanish Consulate serving your official home address (in country of origin) in order to process all the documentation which they require for a work visa . This usually includes, amongst others, the official job offer document, stamped by the Subdelegación del Gobierno; official certificate of no criminal record in country of origin and local health certificate. This step can be undertaken by you or your legal representative, and can take up to 4 months to be processed. 4. Once your home country’s Spanish Consulate has processed your work visa , you have to fetch it in person. It can not be handed to ayone other than you. 5. As soon as you have your work visa you can return to Spain, finalise the application for a work/residence permit and start work. Please note that there is no legal right nor any guarantee to a work visa /permit. All applications are evalutated by the authorities in Spain. Finally, appreciate that the legalisation procedure is difficult, lengthy, and expensive for everyone, making Spain an illogical choice for those who do not intend to be here for at least 2 to 3 years. 3 :
For long term and working visas, you need to contact the nearest Consulate or Embassy. I'm pretty sure there are Embassies in Washington, and there are consulates in New York City, and many other larger cities. Just search Spanish Consulate.
4 :
Not a simple question really and it is a very long process but very much worth it. We are two Americans who moved here to Spain and faced the exact same question. We also have a friend from America who is a physician and is opening a clinic in Nerja Spain. We would be happy to share with you experiences obtaining residencia and can help guide you on the in and outs and mistakes that we made! If you would like us to contact you directly, we have a "Ask Question" form on our website http://www.spain-vacation-holiday.com/index.html Good luck!

Your phone must have a removable sim card, and be unlocked for use in Europe. If your phone doesn't have a sim card, then you need to rent a special multi-band phone and buy a sim card (and it's prepaid, and it won't likely last very long). Do you know? In my day, when we went on school trips to other countries, we didn't contact our families. AT ALL. We sent them a post card or two while on the trip, and they arrived after we had returned. I lived in Spain for a full year, and called my parents TWICE. Once, shortly after we got there, and once, when there was an attempted coup, just to let them know I was okay. You REALLY can't manage to be without your cell phone for a WEEK? They DO have pay phones, there, and phone stores where you can make calls, and hotels, that you can call from the room. And internet cafés, and internet in many hotels, with a few computers around to use.

What is the best way to rent a mobile phone that will work in France/Spain

What is the best way to rent a mobile phone that will work in France/Spain?
I'm going to be traveling in the south of France and into Spain in September and would like to have a mobile phone (I'm traveling from the United States). I would probably need the phone only for 8 days or so. It would need to work in both countries. Any suggestions?

I have never seen a phone for rent, and reading here I never found anyone admitting they even exist. You can bring your own mobile phone, and use your own contract. (If the phone has the band we use here in Europe and your contract allows it.) Or bring your phone and buy a 'sim only' prepaid contract, (technically you need an address in the country you buy it, but mostly a hotel address is good too.) Check that your phone will work here and that you can use a different simcard in it. Or buy a cheap phone here and try to sell it second hand when done with it, (prepaid contracts only,) again you need an address and this time they may check better. But for 8 days I would bring my own phone and just try not to use it unless there are emergencies.
2 :
Just buy a cheap one in store. A pay as you go. And then ask about sim cards. There are some 'tri band' or 'global sims' Google. Ask around...

will my visa card work in Spain.. in all places or some? will I need to notify my bank?
I will be taking a trip with my school in June to Madrid and Barcelona, and was wondering if my American credit card will work there. My teacher who is coming with us said something about some credit cards requiring some type of number when used in Europe.....???

Check with your bank if your Visa card is valid abroad, normally they are but in the past there were some varieties that had restrictions, basically debit cards, not credit cards. The number is just your pin code, the same one you use when taking out money, sometimes you're asked to use it in the stores, in their machines. It's always risky and normally you can say it's not needed, they press ok and it will be enough with your id. I never give my pin code in stores, I prefer to pay cash in that case, especially in small places, not in big stores like El Corte Inglés, where it's safe.
2 :
Of course it will! Any place that accepts Visa, and most places that accept cards will. Ummm. ATM cards need a special number, sometimes. I think they have 5 digit codes over there? yes, call your bank. IF you have an ATM card, make sure that you can use it, that you have correct codes, that they know you will be using it abroad and the dates, so they don't think someone has stolen it from you. Special number? Your 16 digit account number works there, too. Here's the thing: You know that the money there is different...they use Euros. (duh, right?) And that has to be converted into dollars. They charge a fee for that. Most cards charge between 1 - 3% for the service. You would pay that no matter how you get your Euros. It's cheaper to do it through your credit card/atm card...cause there's one less fee involved, and if you have to pay 1%, it's better than the 3% you have to pay to do it with a traveler's check or more if you do cash. BTW, they constantly asked me for ID, as well. Keep your driver's license and/or Passport handy. You should, anyway.
3 :
Yes, they will work. However you will need to have a 4-digit transaction number to either get cash at an ATM or to pay. Some U.S. cards will not work in Europe since the system anticipates misuse. Get it contact with your local bank and tell them that you are planning to travel overseas to have your credit/ATM card changed accordingly..
4 :
NOOOO ! Never assume! I am a Spanish teacher, used to live in Spain and now take kids on overses trips. When students dont listen to my advice, they can't get money and they have problems. IF a store has a sign that says they take Visa, its only the ones on the intl network. To know if it will work on that system and in the ATM machines.... turn the card over.... IF it has a CIRRUS network logo, then it will work. Otherwise, no, it will not. Just because it works in ATM machines here, does not mean it will work in Spain ATM machines. I had a student last year that did not listen and she had no spending $$ for the whole trip. And YES you should definately tell the bank that you are traveling, where you are going, and what dates. Otherwise they may flag your purchases as suspicious, think your card # was stolen and freeze your card. Hope this was helpful.

No, it is illegal. To work in the United States you require a temporary work visa which is near enough impossible to obtain. For more information regarding this then contact the American Embassy in Spain, I have provided you the website below.
2 :
Persons entering the U.S. on a visitor visa, for business or tourism (B-1/B-2), or without a visa on the Visa Waiver Program are not permitted to work. If you are planning to work, or to attend certain training in the U.S., you cannot enter the U.S. with a visitor visa. Instead, you will need a visa in one of the employment categories for temporary workers. More info: http://www.unitedstatesvisas.gov/business.html
3 :
If you are entering the States with a tourist visa you can NOT work in the USA.
4 :
Nope, no way Jose!! It is illegal and the yanks are very hot on it. If you ever want to return to the States in your lifetime then don't do anything that will get you kicked out. If however you don't give a damn and are willing to take the chance go for it it's your choice.
5 :

You definitely won't get a taxi drivers job. They are for the Spanish only. You won't get any job right now due to the economic climate,

Really low that you'll get a job at all, especially if you speak Spanish as well as you write English...of course, if you do better in Spanish, and you have a work permit, right now...still pretty low. Unemployment in Spain is above 20% and rising. Not a good time to be looking for work.

European Union Citizens Any EU citizen intending to stay in Spain for more than three months is obligated to register at the Foreigner's Offices (Oficinas de Extranjería) - or local police station if there is no foreigner's office of the place they intend to stay. A registration certificate as an EU Resident (certificado de registro) is issued. This document certifies their residence in Spain and states name, address, nationality, and the foreigners tax identification or NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) number along with date of registration. Note: Previous to the introduction of this registration certificate in April 2007, foreigners had to apply separately for an NIE number. This is now incorporated in the residence certificate application process. You can get details on what to do at the link below.

Why don't the regional nationalist groups in Spain all work together to get independence for their homelands

Why don't the regional nationalist groups in Spain all work together to get independence for their homelands?
Why don't the Catalan and Basque and Galician and Valencian nationalist groups coordinate their efforts to break away from Spain together? Wouldn't they be a more powerful voice if they unified their efforts to break off from Spain?
Other - Spain - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Simply because the parties concerned insist on speaking their own language and there are so few people who can translate between Basque and Catalan. Then the silly things such as the fact that Mallorquin speakers say that their language is NOT Catalan. And the Catalans are iffy about Valenciano and Alicantino. And as for Bable! That's the problem with Nationalists, the whole basis of their argument is to be racially, politically and linguistically independent. The practicalities make a nonsense of the whole idea of interdependent nationalism . The EU has a similar problem finding Finnish / Modern Greek translators.
2 :
Apart from a percentage of Basques and Catalans, I don't think that there is a great feeling towards devolution in Spain. For one, if they were all to become separate countries they would no longer be recognized by the EU, and as such all funding and support would be dropped. If they then wished to reapply to become a Member state the process may take as long as 5 years to achieve. Many Regions just aren't cash rich enough to go it alone for that long.
3 :
Because that would diminish one or more group's strength in the movement. And because their goals aren't that similar.
4 :
First of all because the majority of the people in their areas are not independentists. Also, if Catalonia, Galicia, Andalucia, etc decided to promote independence, they will be saying that Spain is only the region of Castile, and that would basically say that what they are not is castilians. Something that we already know. Castile is a region, Spain is the group of all the regions of Spain. Saying that you are not Castile does not help on saying you are not Spain. So the only way to avoid this problem is saying that Spain is everything but one especific region. That goes against the idea of going together.
5 :
I agree with Bertuccio. You can't be saying they're breaking away from "Spain" because all those regions are part of Spain. Most of the people of those regions are not for independence (btw, you forgot the Leonese and Andalusian Independence movements lol). I think the main issue is that they make a lot of noise, but in reality, they are only a fraction of the people in those areas (the area with most support perhaps being Catalonia).

Can I work in Spain for the summer

Can I work in Spain for the summer?
Hi, I'm a Cegep student born in Canada and i've lived here all my life, but I have my portuguese nationality (don't have a portuguese passport though). Is it possible for me to work temporarily in Spain over the summer? Please post any solution to my problem thank you!

1 :
If you are national of Portugal, then you are entitled to travel and work freely in EU, and that includes Spain, be it for long term or just for the summer. There is no visa requirement. You MUST however, have at least an identity card or a passport to proof your identity and nationality. If you don't already speak Spanish, I would suggest for you to start learning now. Even in Madrid, there's a limited use of English, and for dealing with paperworks etc to have knowledge of Spanish would be very useful.
2 :
Get that Portuguese passport and you can work any where in the EEC. If you go to the tourist resorts, there will be a lot of English speaking businesses who employ English speaking staff to serve their British customers. Your Canadian accent will be a novelty and could be an asset in getting work. I would warn you that because of the exchange rates of £ to Euro a lot of Brits are not intending to go to Euroland next year so jobs for English speakers will probably not be as plentiful as in previous years.

moving to spain and would like some tips and advice on how to get good substainable work!

Be Spanish.
2 :
The easiest is probably to be an English teacher as many people are learning English there, as for looking for a good job that pays well and all it is best to be European as the company will probably not want to get involved in the whole Work Permit hassle. Or go and visit Spain and look up companies that you might be interested in and see what you can offer them. Jobs in Spain pay very little compared to what you would make in the US so just be prepared...
3 :
I agree with roryo... but I would add that the jobs pay less, but the lifestyle is substantially low. I live in Madrid, I have a B.S. in Biology, but I'm teaching English on my own, can't complain. But you can get a head hunter specialized in your area, and have them do all the work regarding finding a company that will sponsor a non-European Union Citizen. Also, can you work in an specialized area? because those are the jobs that are getting contracts and just for your knowledge, even if you get a company to sponsor you, you will have to go back to the states to wait for your work permit and unless the company can wait for you, they are not going to go through all the whoha. Ok, your options: 1. Look for a job while still in the states and have them sponsor you. Do it through a head hunter though. 2. Come and teach English and wait three years to get what they call, "arraign social" and apply for it. They give you permission to reside here after three years living here, provided that you have means to support yourself. If you do this, remember to travel outside the EU every three months to keep things legal. Not that they care much with American Citizens, but be on the safe side. 3. Marry a Spaniard, and get the docs. Good luck, email me with any more questions, if you want.

I´m American. I have a valid resident permit for Germany but I´d like to move to SPAIN, can I work there

I´m American. I have a valid resident permit for Germany but I´d like to move to SPAIN, can I work there?
I have a valid one year resident and work permit for Germany but I really miss Barcelona and would like to return, but I need to look for legal work. Most places ask Americans to have EU papers, does my German resident /stay title allow me the opportunity to look for work in Spain and can I then apply for a Spanish resident visa once I have obtained legal work? In Spain will I have to apply for the same type of work I do in Germany? Urgently need advice.

Why the hell do you want to move out of America.....the country that 90% of the world is dying, sometimes literally, to get into?
2 :
Hi, You should be able to travel to Spain since you probably have a Schengen visa. From there you should be able to find employment, but I don't know if you need a work permit before that, or whether your would-be employer must sponsor you first. Give the Spanish consulate a call and ask them.
3 :
European here. You have a one year resident and work permit for Germany. But have to tell you your German resident stay only allowed you to work in Germany not the rest of Europe. You will have to apply to each European country if you want to work there. Like you said you can apply for a Spanish resident visa before you step foot in Spain.
4 :
in order to work in Spain , you must first find a job there ,yes you can go look for a job ,once you have obtained a job you will have residency ,no, you do not have to have the same job , U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist or business to Spain you may also look on the internet : http://jobs.escapeartist.com/Openings/Spain www.monster.es, www.trabajos.com, www.infojobs.es.

Will my iPhone 4G from the U.S. work in Spain with the Orange network?
I want to use my unlocked iPhone 4G that I bought in the U.S. with an Orange contract in Spain. Will this work? Is this internet signal any different or anything like that?

It will work, but it just might not be on Orange as you will be roaming. It will connect to whatever network is putting out the strongest signal. Bear in mind also that an iphone is always online so it will be a good idea to disable that to prevent a large bill when you return home. Your network can advise you how to do this.
2 :
If you put in an Orange sim card in, then yes, it will.

Will my US appliances work in Spain

Will my US appliances work in Spain?
I'm going to Spain in December and I want to bring my laptop, cell phone, iPod, hair dryer, hair straightener and other things to Spain. But my mom has told me that the outlets and plugs are different or something like that. So will i be able to plug them in and will they work?
Packing & Preparation - 3 Answers

No, they will not work without purchasing a converter to go from US to Euro specs.
2 :
They will not work. you will need an adaptor to plug your appliances in. You can buy adaptors when you get to spain. Hoped this helped :)
3 :
You will need an adapter for each appliance since the outlets are different. These can be bought cheaply at any hardware store. The second thing you need to know is that the voltage in spain is 220V compared to 110V in the US. fortunately most appliances today are dual-voltage meaning they work in both countries. you should check out somewhere on the appliance or its adapter to see if this is the case. If it says only 110V then you are better off buying a new one in Spain. From my experience I can tell you that your iPod, Laptop, and cellphone are a sure thing. the others I advise to check the voltage label it is usually somewhere at the bottom or next to the cord or on the adapter.

It will work. Some network operator in Spain has their service at 900/1800 mhz, except Xfera which only use 2100mhz and 3G service.Upon selecting what operator should you use, make sure that the respective operator has that 1800mhz on your area.Sometimes cellphone operator use 1800 only in urban area, and 900mhz in rural area. The advantage of lower frequency is wider coverage but less quality (it still decent you know). Here is a list of operators in Spain together with their frequencies http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_es.shtml

Depends on the settings of the phone and the rules of the company. Some do, some will not, but all that work will be way more expensive when used in Spain. If you want to use a phone in England mainly and a little in Spain, tell the people in the shop, so they can sell you one that will work. And they can also help you with the settings of the phone and 'contract' so that it will work there. If you want to use it as much, or more, in Spain, better buy a prepaid phone in Spain too.

Would it be difficult for a Chef to work in Spain if they don't speak Spanish

Would it be difficult for a Chef to work in Spain if they don't speak Spanish?
My friend in Birmingham wants to move to the Costa Del Sol, she has 5 years of work experience as a Chef and can only speak a bit of Spanish, she's a very slow learner, would it be hard for her to get a job? I know we're in a recession right now, this question is just hypothetical.

if they dont know any spanish what so ever yea might be alittle diffucult
2 :
Ummmmmmm, yeah. since people in Spain don't generally speak English...being Spain, and all. Besides, there aren't any jobs to have right now, you would do better to wait until the recession lifts, at best. Hey! By then, your friend could have learned Spanish!
3 :
There are English speaking restaurants here on the Costa del Sol. Quite a few are British owned and if you are British and are the owner, it is easier to discuss menus etc with an English speaking chef. I know 2 German restaurants where the owners only employ German speaking chefs. It is always going to be an advantage to speak the language, but it is not necessary in some cases. Jobs are hard to find at the moment, but there is a glimmer of optimism at the moment with the recession. Some new buildings have been sold and a couple of new restaurants have opened.
4 :
Ummm yeah it will be hard to land a chef gig in Spain, number #1 she is not fluent in Spanish. Its just saying if a guy from japan that speaks only Japanese comes to America and works at a high end restaurant here, is he going to have a hard time communicating with other chef's? Yes he will, plus spain is in a recession just like we are, any jobs that ARE AVAILABLE will most likely go to a fellow Spaniard before an outsider unless it was a special skill job

Will getting a residency card in Spain allow me to work there

Will getting a residency card in Spain allow me to work there?
I have double nationality being from El Salvador and also I am a US citizen. I want to move to Europe particularly in Spain, first of all will getting a Spanish residency will allow me to work as well there? Or would I need to get a work permit as well? And second anybody has suggestions or tips in order to be able to relocate to Spain and Work and live there? I appreaciate in advance :)
Other - Europe - 2 Answers

1 :
I cannot answer but I have a question. How do you expect to be able to get a Spain residency? On either your El Salvador or US passport you may be able to travel as tourist for up to 90 days in a 180 period to Spain. To get a residency you will need to have a work sponsor who has to justify that he is not able to fill his vacancy on the local and the European labor market. You may be able to perform illegal work although officially staying legal by staying three months on the El Salvador passport, then flying for a day to a non-Schengen country like Bulgaria, Croatia, Ireland, Romania or the United Kingdom, and re-enter Spain on the US passport to stay for another three months. This doing repeatedly would enable you to stay in Spain for a long period it would however be illegal.
2 :
If you want to work in Spain you need to get a work permit. Getting a residency card will not help, as residency cards are given out to all sorts of people. There are the occassional millionares who do not need to work for a living, yet need a residency card to stay in the country legally. There are also foreign students who need residency cards to study at a Spanish university. Foreigners (children and relatives) who are dependants of Spanish or EU citizens also need residency cards. A residency card allows you to reside in Spain, it does not necessary allow you to work. If you have college degree and speak Spanish as your native tongue you can try to apply for a skilled migrant visa from the Spanish embassy. This would include a work permit in the residency card. You should also look into getting a degree from a Spanish university (Bachelor, masters or PhD), as graduates are given work permits if they find jobs suitable to the qualifications they acquired.

I understand that the visa situation is this: if you are NOT a member of the EU, you can´t get one. Can´t get a visa, can´t work legally, not on your own. That said, you may be able to get something through CIEE, or some similar exchange program. Try searching Work Exchange Programs. link to Spain.
3 :
I am an American who has been living and working legally in Spain since 1992. As another person said, it is extremely difficult, but not impossible, to work legally in the country. The fact of the matter is that most potential employers do not want to waste their time legalizing anyone who is just going to be around for a little while. But with perseverance you may find someone who is interested in taking you on as an intern...or working illegally in the service industry. Another option is to come to study "something" and you can them work in the related field for obtaining job experience.

What kind of work are you looking for? If it is the temporary, summer work type, it will be difficult to get legally.

By the time you can find a job in Spain, Ronaldo may have retired!
2 :
Madrid is expensive, not as much as London, but it is expensive. It's almost impossible to find a job now, being 16 with no experience and qualifications (you're too young to have any) all you can hope for is a part time job at Burger King or the like. And you can't live on that in Madrid. You can always save money for a short holiday in Madrid including tickets for a Real Madrid game.
3 :
I don't think you can. I believe you have to be at least 18, and you pretty much (until the economy changes) have to be a citizen. You realize there are 30% of the population (that's millions of people) looking for work. "is it hard 2 get a job"??? Yeah. Hard to get a job, especially when you don't know how to write your OWN language properly, but also, you know, because there are thousands of people applying for every job that is open, and YOU aren't likely to even be eligible! Hopefully, by the time you are 18 and LEGAL to work, then the economy might be better than it has been these last two years. Oh, yeah...fluency in the language is kinda a requirement.
4 :
Statistically you probably stand more chance playing alongside Ronaldo than getting a job over here.
5 :
Not perhaps for you but maybe others may be interested. Tui are looking for a Summer 2010 Finance Administrator on the Jobs Financial web site. Lets face it, jobs in Spain are few and far between so I thought thaty I would pass it on.

I see I'm not the only American who's dying to live in Spain. :) I've read that international business is a good field. I don't know much about it but if you were to work for a company that has an office in Spain you could ask to be transferred abroad. The American company would help you deal with all the bureaucracy and all the crap that goes with it. There may be other options, I have the same problem, originally the goal was for me to stay in Spain long enough to get my TEFL certification and then return to Mexico and get work down there... but the more I hear about Spain the more I wanna stay there forever! Everybody accuses me of making this up but I had Spanish ancestors and it just kills me that I've sacrificed all my life just to go to Spain for a couple months and if they hadn't come to America I might have been Spanish!! Me siento fatal... Espero que te haya ayudado, hope I've helped! Hey, I nearly forgot. Are you familiar with this website? www.transitionsabroad.com They may have some ideas. also go online and type in Spain and expatriate and see what you can google. Suerte chica. :D
3 :
You probably couldn't get a job as an English teacher right now, either. Ummmm. A WAAAAAY better economy! Try CIEE (okay, mostly English teaching) or just search Work in Spain. You will need a Visa, and probably have to get it on your own, though some of those placement agencies will help you find one. They will be sure you have one before they send you...if they are any good, as their reputation rest upon getting LEGAL employees. Problem is, right now, the economy is SOOOOOOOO rough in Spain, that few places are hiring, and the government isn't issuing a lot of those visas. ¡Buena Suerte! Oh, yeah. Ability to speak Spanish is a huge must, too, as already mentioned.

6 :
First you have to get a visa and this will only entitle you to visit Spain for 3 months. In reality you can get away with being here much longer.. In the larger cities such as Madrid there are a lot of large American corporations setting up so it would be easier to get a job through one of these. Being a non EU you are treated in just the same way as imigrants from Morocco, and this is not very good. To work here legally for a US citizen is very difficult as the paperwork requirements are ridiculously strict and complex, they seem to go out of their way to make it virtually impossible (unless you are married to a Spanish resident). Jobs don't go to the Spanish only. I have always been employed here and have worked for a couple of Spanish lawyers who could have employed a Spanish girl. In fact, the Spanish are complaining that a lot of Eastern Europeans are taking up the few jobs in the construction industry. Eastern Europeans are often employed in the tourist trade as they normally learn to speak Spanish and don't seem to have a problem learning other languages that are needed in the tourist industry. However if you want to work in a totally Spanish customer orientated business, a foreigner would find it very difficult especially if you are not fluent in Spanish.

Hi Despite what the previous answerer said, if it is unlocked then the network is not important. However the US uses a different frequency/band to most of the rest of the world. In Europe we use 900/1800 Mhz and in the US they use 850 Mhz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri_band) so you need to make sure that the phone is set up to work with different frequencies. Make sure you buy the right version - there are two, the X1a and X1c: http://www.multicellphone.com/sony-ericsson-xperia-x1-white-paper-shows-two-versions-x1a-and-x1c/ Hope that is useful.

You may need to buy a transformer to adjust your electronics to UK standards. If you both use PAL (625 lines per frame) then you should have no problem at all. How to keep cool while working in Spain

How to keep cool while working in Spain?
This summer, I will be volunteering at a horse rescue centre in Spain. Obviously, it will be warm, as the region Im going to will be in the high thirties ( that's degrees C by the way) but, as I will be working with horses, I will also need sturdy footwear. There may also be some riding involved, as they hold a pony club. Is there any horsewear brand available in the UK that I can get cool, but not expensive riding wear? e.g. jodhpurs, boots etc? I'm set for riding hats and tops. Any other advice is welcome.

Horse rescue in Spain sounds a bit of a con. Spaniards love horses. Perhaps La Crisis has hit but you can always sell horses to the butcher in Spain if the worst comes to the worst. Just google "ropa Hipica " and see what Spain has to offer in horsey clothing. e.g http://www.hipisur.com/tienda/Pantalones+y+art%C3%ADculos+sobrepantalones/Pantalones+de+Se%C3%B1ora/173 The usual here is good sunscreen, a good hat / helmet. tee shirt , tight jeans and a good pair of boots. You can keep cool if you remember that "Only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun".

If you are a citizen of the Netherlands...an EU country, then no. I don't believe you need a work visa, but you will need a permanent residence permit...check with the local Spanish consulate for best information...Things like that seem to change almost daily.
2 :
If you are Dutch you don´t need a Visa I imagine...you´ll need a paper called NIE (Numero de identificación extrangeros) .As soon as you´ve got a national health security number and a job contract, you can have the NIE done.Go to any police station and ask (It´s where all this type of papers are done). Things change through the years. My husband is British and he had to go through quite a lot of burocracy papers...it was a pain in the @rse. Contact your Embassy and the´ll give you all the information .But to work in Spain legally, you´ll need the NIE,that´s for sure.
3 :
No you do not need a visa to live in Spain, if you are an EU citizen. You will however need a NIE number if you want to work in Spain.
4 :
you have it so easily! you don't need a visa at all because you are a EU citizen
5 :
Being from an EU member state you are allowed to live and work in Spain indefinetely without any requierements. You will just need to fill some paperforms like the NIE, but living and working in Spain is a RIGHT you have, just like any other Spanish citizen.

A while ago I bought a hair straightener in France, so it works in French outlets. I'm not sure if it will work in Spain. Do they have the same electrical outlets?? THANKS!!!!

you can get adapters, to let the fit into the socket.

The French and Spain outlets are the same, I believe. They are different than the ones in America, they both have two dots for plugs about two inches away from each other.
3 :
They are the same throughout most of the EU so Spain will be OK. Britain is an exception.

To work in Spain you will need an official PERMISO, something that you get after going through official application procedures. That said, it is still possible to work under the table, so to speak (no pun intended). But it will have to be in fields like personal language instruction, house cleaning, babysitting, labor, etc. Employers know the rules and are fully aware that they risk heavy fines if they hire an "illegal". If you can show proof of health insurance, financial independence (obviously that might be difficult if you are desperate for work, I'm sorry) and a clean police record, the more certain route is the official one. Good Luck. PS When you work without a permit, you risk being taken advantage of and having no recourse.

I am going to add to Nosce's... answer that if you want to ask for permission of residence here, you need to have at least $75,000.00 in the bank. You can stay as an English Teacher and travel outside the EU to be on the safe side. Good Luck!

spanish + british men = a fun european vacation :D

buy a Spanish terrestial digital receiver (digibox) and plug into the TV scart socket. should be less than 80 euros. if you want English TV, get a sky box and dish, buy don't tell Sky as they don't like it. In Spain you will probably need a large dish.

Will my hair appliance work in Spain

Will my hair appliance work in Spain?
I am going to Spain. I have a remington straightner that has dual voltage. I didn't realize this until after I bought a voltage converter that has a plug adapter built in. If I plug in my hair appliance in Spain (into the adaptar of course) will it be okay?

Yes it will be fine. You need a two-pin plug adaptor or do as I do and put a Spanish plug on a four-in-one extension lead from home which gives me four English sockets for the laptop, battery charges, etc. without needing to bother about convertor plugs for them. I'm just back from my ninth visit to Spain. No problem at the airport with the extension lead. It can go in hand baggage if you like, same with the hair straightener. I bought a Master Visa Debit Card in the United States, and was wondering would it work in Spain?
If so, does it automatically exchange currency when I use the card in a store or restraunt?

Yes. You should even be able to use it to draw cash from an ATM.
