If you are a US citizen....... you can not work anywhere in Europe without a work Visa, so you would need to apply for one. However if you have been offered a job.......your employer should be attending to this matter as they can be fined up to 10,000 euros for hiring someone who is not legal to work. I think this is another ''fake'' question......i have no idea why you people do this.
2 :
If you are a British citizen you can come to Spain to live and work. Where are you going to stay. You can't rent anything until you are 18. Have you finance to start with. Wages aren't good here and you will need somewhere straight away and pay up front. If you say you are a British citizen, you will need to notify the tax office and the NHS. If you stay in Spain for more than 183 days you will technically be a resident. If you are a British citizen who now is domiciled in the US, that may cause you a problem working in Spain. You should check everything with the Spanish Embassy first.

Student work in Spain

Student work in Spain?
My friend and I (18 &19) want to go to Spain, hopefully Barcelona, to work for a month or two during the summer. Any tips on where to look for work etc? All advice would be appreciated!

Work is hard to come by in Spain right now. You might get a job working in a bar, but that is long hours and very little pay. That won't pay for your accommodation. Whilst you are working way into the night everyone you serve will be out enjoying themselves. On top of that, you have to eat & sleep. Barcelona is expensive.

You would do well to investigate this option, as getting a work visa on your own is very difficult, and likely to remain so. You might even start the process now. I have some friends who were accepted on a work exchange program, and it took them three years to get all the paperwork and placements worked out. Here's a link to some options. I can only vouch for the fact that CIEE is a good source, but if you have a phobia about heat, then you might not be too pleased. They only work in Sevilla. Very hot there (still, my favorite city in the world! very pretty and romantic!) http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=slv8-hptb6&p=work%20in%20Spain&type=
2 :
As you are from the UK, you probably already know that you don't need a visa, so no need to worry about that. When you arrive in Spain, you will most likely find that your gcse level spanish won't cut. I would suggest booking yourself in for some classes as soon as you arrive in spain - the school you go to will level test you and put you in the appropriate class. As for finding a job, it depends where you go. You will have an excellent chance of getting a job as an English teacher come September, especially if you move to Madrid. For a job in a bar, you would have to speak a decent level of spanish and if you lived in a tourist spot then there are plenty of Irish/British bars you could look for work in. Another idea is to move to one of the islands as there are a lot more english speaking people there and therefore more demand for english speaking workers. Don't listen to the people that tell you not to come because it's too hard - I came and it was a good move. Just make sure you have a couple of grand savings before you arrive.

Depending on your skills and your fluency in Spanish, you can get many opportunities over there. If you only speak English, you could work in Call centers. Many are located in Barcelona. Otherwise, if you are interested in hospitality/catering, you can provide your services to restaurants/hotels that are located on the Mediterranean coast. Your English will be useful in areas that receive many British tourists, check out jobs in local newspaper. In order to give you more job opportunities, it would be better to stay in a big city. Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga are cities that can interest you. Since Spaniards use to share their flats, it will be easy to find a room for €300. Good luck.

If you are an EU citizen you can work anywhere in EU without restrictions but each country has some rules to follow before u go ahead. Once u are in Spain u need to contact the foreign police & must register with them within 90 days & get a residence permit ( even if u r EU Citizen) & then start working. After 90 days if u dont get residence permit u will have some problems but that doesnt meat u are illegal in that country its just that u didnt follow the rules & authorities can make problems but cannot just kick u out of country unless u commit a crime.

How do people "work out" in Spain? Do they have gyms

How do people "work out" in Spain? Do they have gyms?
I am studying abroad at la Universidad de Complutense en Madrid in the Spring, and I don't want to give up my cardio/strength training routine. Will there be somewhere for me to work out? Maybe even take a pilates or spinning class? Sorry when I studied in Italy and Costa Rica none were close by. I didn't realize the question was offensive. I just wondered what kind of classes people took, or if most preferred to jog/bike outside.

ask around there has to be a gym somewhere close by, there are gyms in almost every country in the world unless you live in an out of the way place.
2 :
They get their work out by getting chased by a bull in the streets after a good night's drinking. Well, once a year anyways. Good luck on your trip.
3 :
Of course we have gyms some with very sophisticated machines. This is Europe, what do you think we are like here? Even where I live in the once forgotten province of Spain and in a small costal village we have at least three gyms of different sorts.
4 :
Spain has the best diets in Europe, some of the best wines, best people and certainly some of the most modern gyms in the world. Here on the costa they have no end of place to go, I should imagine in Madrid they might be even better, as here on the costa folks tend to jog/run/power walk etc., in the good weather, then go for a beer and tapas!
5 :
there are plenty of gyms in every barrio and i'm sure you will find something to suit your tastes. there is fitness first too. If you have fitness first in your own country join up and pay the extra to use all gyms worldwide.
6 :
Yes, we're a developed country, you know. Sorry, but honestly, this question seems to be more typical from a illiterate than from a university student. Do we have gyms???? is it a joke???? lol
7 :
I live in a small city in southern Spain. They do have gyms just like in the states, however, I don't know how popular pilates and spinning classes are. This is something you would have to take up with gym management.
8 :
No, we climb up the trees and jump over the cars and buses... Apart from the joke, there are plenty of gyms where you would be able to do whatever you want/need. Anyway, welcome to Madrid and have a nice staying.
9 :
of course we have gyms, in what kind of country do you think we are? (don't wanna be an American idiot )
10 :
If you ask 100 Spaniards if they work out 95 will say, "Yes I work out. I walk every day." That's the general way most all Spaniards get exercise. But in this new, hustle bustle world even fewer people have time to walk just to walk - unless they're going somewhere. Few people, except older retired persons, take evening strolls in the street. Do people go to gyms? Sure! But not as commonly as in the USA. Gyms in Spain are fewer and farther between, that's for sure, but there are some great, large, modern gyms which are every bit as good as the gyms I'd attended in the USA. My gym (nowhere near Complutense) has spinning, pilates, dancing, and other kinds of classes as well as the usual electronic machines (bikes, treadmills, elliptical), free weights, and weight machines. There are also a number of tiny, hole-in-the-wall gyms which have nothing more than a room full of aged free-weights. I don't like these gyms at all. Madrid has some big gyms too. Ask around where you live and certainly someone will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck with your study-abroad! Saludos, MadridMan(.com)
11 :
"Sorry when I studied in Italy and Costa Rica none were close by." I've never been to Italy or Costa Rica but I'd obviously take for granted that there are gyms there, at least in the cities. Now, if you want Gyms to be located round the corner of your house so life becomes more comfortable to you.... move your ass, walk the streets, and find one yourself. That's a good cardio exercise.

you need a power adapter - the sockets there are different, too. The adapter will have resistors built in to convert the voltage, and will go in the spanish socket but have an american outlet.
2 :
You need a big heavy expensive transformer (step down) with a rating equal to that of the hair drier. see second reference. $60, weighs 25 pounds. Better is to spend the few bucks for a dual-voltage drier. Cheaper, and you don't have to lug the transformer around. I have one Iv'e used on trips for a lot of years. see first reference. About $10-20 .

How can he get a job in a company and work legally here? What are the specific requirements for someone to apply for a visa without specific pre-determined purpose here? He can apply for a tourist visa to enter the US and then look for a job while here. When he finds an employer, they will need to file the legal paper work to get him a H1B visa - an employment based visa. However, it is very difficult to do so because of the annual quota on H1B - it runs out very fast. And, there are many companies would specify that they only consider candidates with permanent work authorization. Perhaps he can work for a company in Spain with operations in US. Moving to the US through internal transfer is probably faster and easier. My 2 cents.
2 :
if you can find a job to hire you, they will sponsor your green card, work permit, or the visa you need to work if what you do is an asset, you can sponsor yourself go to the uscis.gov

If you're asking this question, then you clearly haven't tried to plug it in yet. Electrical outlets in Europe are insane. They're nothing like the ones in North America. You'll need a converter to properly connect it to an outlet.

ANY electrical appliance that can work at 220V will work in Spain. You need to get a $4.00 plug adapter, if you bought it in another country. If you already have an appliance and it is NOT dual voltage, then go out and buy a voltage converter. READ THE PACKAGE.
2 :
I've spent 2 different summers in Spain and took my flat iron each time. You have to buy a converter (look up the voltage in Spain) from either your home country, or in Spain. If you choose to buy one from Spain you can get one at a department store called El Corte Ingles (in every major city). Just be careful where you lay your flat iron even when it's off! As soon as I plugged in mine over there, the electric current started heating it up! Weird but true! Good thing was that it got super hot! Even hotter than it heated up here in the U.S.

I lived in Southern Spain 5 years before it was legal to find work there. Now there are opportunities on the Costa del Sol. A lot of tourists so there is work in the tourist industry and in real estate sales. Condo's are booming there. Marbella is where the creme de la creme goes and Torremolinos where the cheap tours go. But hotels are everywhere and different tour guides etc...with different languages are always on demand. Try and visit and see what you can find out. Grand Circle offers inexpensive weekly tours.

No. You will need an all region dvd player

I'm not sure about Spain, but I brought a DVD in Hong Kong and it works here in the U.S.
3 :
Probably NOT because Spain, and all of western Europe is called Region 2. You will see Region 2 or the letters PAL on the back of the DVD plastic case. PAL DVDs and video casettes will play on a PAL television screen, having a certain number of lines of color and "flashes per second". In America, REGION 1,the NTSC system isused. Different lines on the screen and different "flashes per second". IT WON't work nohow noway... unless the DVD is coded as one that will play in any region. Probably the person above me, who bought a DVD in Hong Kong, bought such a DVD. Those Chinese are the masters of bootleg and piracy, and will sell anything to anybody for 10 cents profit. NOW FOR YOU, my fellow American. I have tried to buy a DVD player in America that will play both PAL and NTSC. No luck for 5 years. Here in Europe, I can buy a dual region DVD player EVERYWHERE and they are cheap. 40, 45, 30 euro. The cheaper the better. And I buy DVDs in America and can play them for my children in Europe. But the European machine will not play ANYTHING on an American NTSC tv screen. Whatcha gonna do? one thing... buy your films in America and bring them to Europe, play them on a cheapy machine 220 volts! Good luck......from Trevor.

Spain isn't a developing country. They don't bring volunteers to work in their orphanages, just as the USA doesn't bring foreign people to come over and work in the foster care system. If you are fluent in Spanish, you can have look online for child services NGOs and email them to see if they would be willing to involve you as a volunteer while you are on vacation in Spain. If you are not fluent in Spanish, you can't volunteer in Spain, because you don't speak the local language. A language course in Spain might be better for you. I recommend IEMA, in the small town of Avila, north of Madrid http://www.iema.com/

How does a US citizen get a work permit in Spain

How does a US citizen get a work permit in Spain?
I'm going there next year through an embassy program for language and culture assistants, and although they're paying me, my Spanish professor told me that it wouldn't really be enough to live on in Madrid. I'm saving up what I can before I go, but it would be nice to earn another paycheck while I'm over there, even if it's just part-time/minimum wage (I'm a college student, it's not like I'm used to a 6 figure income or anything). But I have no idea where to begin, any advice would be appreciated!
Spain - 3 Answers

1 :
You will need to contact the Spanish embassy nearest you, or on line. I believe you will need someone to sponsor you, as I was once going to defect to Gran Canaria, Spain, and that's what I was gonna do. It may be different for a college kid though...check it out.
2 :
I've heard that it is hard for non-EU citizens to get work permits in the EU unless you have a skill no one else in Europe has. It is worth a try though. Go to the embassy or try to secure a job first. Look on the internet for jobs in your city.
3 :
This will be tough. You need to get the job before you get there, and your sponsor/employer will have to do the paper work. If I were you, I'd call up the person in charge of the embassy program and find out exactly what the salary and living condition situation will be. Maybe they'll have some ideas.

No you can't, you will need a visa especially because of the EU membership of Spain which only provides working visa exemption to other EU countries. As a Chilean citizen, you could stay in Spain without a visa up to 3 months but you could not legally work. It is only good for tourists. "Spain Visa Information Spain does not apply any restrictions on the access to its labour market by citizens of other EEA countries including citizens of new EU member countries ( Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) If You Are From A Country That Is Not A European Member You Must Obtain A Work Visa Or Permit To Work In Spain" http://www.anyworkanywhere.com/visas_es.html
2 :
No, you need to find a job where employer can sponsor your work permit & then u need work visa per given work permit. Only EU citizens can work in Spain without restrictions.
3 :
Maybe not because there is no work in Spain. The unemployment rate is 7.6% with about 20% under the poverty line and both are getting worse. The unemployment rate in Chile is 7% with about 18% under the poverty line. Probably the closest place with a decent chance to find work is Mexico.

Sorry I can't help with specifics, but I would suggest Barcelona because it's a very artsy area. Places like that are usually open to new designers, etc. I would try google for more specifics
2 :
Where are you from now? I've been to Spain before, and absolutely love it. Their architecure (cant spell today) is amazing. I'd probably say Barcelona too, like the person said above. I'm going there next summer for San Fermin (running of the bullls) in Pamplona I heard their is a really good school in Mexico that can teach you the language in Cuernavaca, MX. Actually heard it from a few ppl. (business owners, executives...)
3 :
Well, You must speak the language well enough to work. You should have an internationally recognised qualification and proveable experience. Madrid and Barcelona are the places to be. That´s where the money is. Prepare a nice looking sales document and send it to all the architects in both provinces. Good luck.
4 :
I'm from barcelona. It's a cosmopolitan city with a good architecture so for your job would be good. To perfect the language I definetely don't reccomend you BCN because we speak catalan! foreigners who live in Barcelona talk well about the city. If you don't have money don't go to BCN because rent a flat is very expensive. que vagi bé (es: que vaya bien, en: Luck in the future)

As someone who has gone totally crazy in the past couple of years trying to get jobs in Spain, I can definitely say that it is NOT at all easy to get a work permit in the European Union as an American!! I was just looking for small jobs in academies as an English teacher, so I did manage to find a few places that would pay me "under the table" without a contract, but larger companies would be much less likely to work that way. The government is really strict about not hiring non-EUers, and most businesses don't want to take that risk. It is possible for them to help you to apply to get a work permit, but it's a long (1-2 years I've heard) and complicated process that most businesses don't want to deal with. Whenever I ran into foreigners working in Spain, is was usually through one of three ways: they had a Spanish parent (so they had a Spanish passport as well), they were married to a Spaniard (most common), or they were working without a contract. If you do try to find a job there, best of luck! I hope it works out for you.

hey this is why yahoo answers is a very useful SITE!. all the people here have very good points!. specially Itxaro. here are some points I'd like to address. 1.-Barcelona is located in Catalonia region which has a different language (catalonian language , is related to Latin language like the french ,Spanish Italian are, but is it not Spanish) bad news!. 2.-the catalonian people dislike foreigners (GUIRIS) WHO SPEAKS OTHER LANGUAGES OTHERS than catalonian language , specially the ones who speak basic Latin-American Spanish! there is an strong bias against Spanish speakers as a second language. 3.-the people in Spain don't know a word of English, the Mexican people know more English than the Spanish , even the Portuguese people on the street have a conversational English level when in Spaniards don't. 4.-i think if you get a student visa for more than 6 months you can also get a work permit could be possible to find a job. I was doing a research to study in Spain (Madrid) few years ago but I just decided to take a trip over there instead of travelling , but keep in mind Catalunya has different immigration and foreign affairs laws , i know for sure Madrid is under Spanish jurisdiction therefore is possible to get a work permit when living in Madrid I'm not sure if the same applies to Catalonya. Barcelona (BCN). 5.-The accommodation is really expensive that's why the people in Spain can't afford have a family, thus, they remain in their parents household until early 30's. If you find a job even a legal job over there , you won't be able to pay for your accommodation and you'll be forced to share it with strangers. the Spanish people are living paycheck to paycheck and due to income equality you won't be able to find a wealthier boyfriend to marry up!. 6.-move there only if you have a job offer and it must be higher than 1500 euros to starting considering it, or at least get a friend of yours to take a trip together. 7.-i did read your answer about Dubai option. i think is a good option due the highest male to female ratio which is leaning towards you . You 'll be able to find a job there ,you can also find an skilled engineer to marry up!. Dubai has 40% percent more males than females. Common sense tells me there is a great change to find a boyfriend who is seeking desperately for a girlfriend, I've been in towns with 15%percent more women than men and believe me the STATISTICS favoured me a lot!, i assume UAE may be seeking a solution to curb this disparity among genders by attracting skilled females workers from overseas. 8.-Spain does not have a high quality of living, I'm of the think me as a mexican and being skilled, the quality of living does not improve a lot, It's a little bit higher , take into account the mexican people do have children that's make a huge difference on the other hand, spain Is suffering from the lowest birth ratio in the western hemisphere probably the lowest in the world thus they are not so screwed like my fellow mexican who have 4 or 5 children. you know what I mean?. Summary Europe has tighter labor laws and markets. The unemployment in spain is above 8% and growing(comparing it with U.S. 4 or 5%) The quality of living does not improve with your qualification in a high extent. they have fixed salaries instead of free market salaries that's why spain has one of the lowest income gap in Europe ATUALLY SPAIN has the lowest salaries in the whole europe besides Portugal, Greece.. Spain is heading to a recession due to the burst in the local housing bubble, so the constrution SECTOR is cooling down all over Spain you may have trouble to find a construction-related JOB in the coming months, Let's hope they experience a soft landing in the housing sector otherwise spain may crash economically. keywords "spanish housing" "spain economy" "spainish housing bubble" "mileurismo" "spain deficit account" "spain unsustainable" check the link below!. just to finish , talk about this with an economist and qualified persons , changing one's dwelling place is a quite hard decision (A LIFE CHANGING desicion) that should be taken too seriously you have to take into consideration not only the current job market conditons but the economic performace in the short and the long run as well. accordingly to my interpretation of the spanish economy's statistics is a no go place either in the short run or long run to seek fortune over there. thanks. best regards qwertyscans@yahoo.com.mx

You'd be much better off waiting until your spanish is at least good enough for basic conversation... However, if you want look in the following websites.. http://www.jobtoasterspain.com/ http://www.typicallyspanish.com/html/english/business_,038_economy/employment/
2 :
If you can't speak Spanish yet, then I'm afraid you'll be lost in Málaga. Many people away from the tourist areas of the Costa Del Sol can't speak English. The job prospects here right now aren't good. As Abuelo Nany says, wait until you can speak Spanish, but even then unless you are a brain surgeon or highly qualified you may not find a job.
3 :
Good choice--I LOVE Malaga! But in Spain, they require kids to take English in school, so a lot of people probably know some basic English. You could get a job as an au pair, which is where you would live with a family and watch their kids when then need you to. I did that. Some families already speak English, and some want to improve their English. And in turn, they can help you with Spanish! If you're interested in that, try these free au pair sites: www.newaupair.com www.easyaupair.com www.greataupair.com And theres a lot more, too. You can always do a search. Good luck!

Will my appliances work in Spain

Will my appliances work in Spain?
I'm finally going in November... after waiting and sacrificing for 29 years... and I've done loads of research. I still have a question, though. I have hair management issues and so I have to use a blowdryer and a flatiron on my hair. However, I know that the voltage is different (US uses 110 and Spain uses 220, I believe). Will my appliances work over there, or will I have to buy new ones over there?
Other - Spain - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You can buy an electrical converter ( a plug like thing) at an appliance store before you go.
2 :
there are converters that you can buy. go to your local hardware and electronics store and ask them about it. OR you can buy them when you get there.
3 :
First, check to see if your appliances are dual voltage. It'll say something like 110v/220v on it. If they are dual voltage, all you'll need will be a plug adapter. (They may have a switch you have to turn to get the correct voltage.) However, if they aren't, you need a voltage converter. For heat-producing items you need one with higher wattage; for charging phones, laptops, etc. you need one with lower wattage. So your best bet is to get a combination converter. I use this one. Pricey, but oh so handy: http://www.magellans.com/store/Adaptor_Plugs___Converters___Voltage_ConvertersEA238?Args= Don't wait until you get there to buy one, as it will be horrendously expensive.

Ok this is what I found... Residency and Work Permits American citizens wanting to study, reside, or work in Spain must obtain the appropriate visa from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their state/country of last residence. After the visa has been issued, foreigners have three months to apply for the corresponding permit with the Spanish authorities in Spain. Obtaining a residence or work permit is a complicated process; since regulations change continually, we suggest that you write directly to the: Spanish National Police Calle Moratin, 43 28014 Madrid You may also check the Ministry of Interior ’s website, or call the Ministry of Interior, within Spain, toll-free at 900-15-00-00. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also manages a website. Take a look The Embassy Of the United States in Spain website.. http://madrid.usembassy.gov/cons/acstraveling.html Good Luck Buenas Suerte

You'll need electrical adapters in Europe.
2 :
US Candada and Mexico have similar electric conditions. listen to tom I would go to bestbuy or some other store and look up for international adapters all over europe the have different outlets. and you might need different ones. if you are only going to spain you must carry only the spanish one.
3 :
It works in Mexico because the voltage and plugs are the same in Mexico. Seriously? You didn't buy one that was dual voltage? No. If you don't get a Voltage converter (which is sold by wattage...check the wattage before you go to a luggage store to buy one, and usually comes with a bunch of plug adapters) then your appliance will either blow up, or get so hot it will burn your hair, possibly starting a fire.
4 :
You will need a 50 cycle converter since most everything in the US is made for 60 cycles. Also, most wall socket plugs have round prongs instead of the blade style we have here. Almost all of Europe is 50 cycle AC.
5 :
yes. you need an adapter which you can easily get here anyway. the local shops wherever you are, have them.

If you are not already a EU national (from Europe) then you will have to get a visa to work/study there, have a look at this it tells you quite a bit about it> http://www.irantour.org/spain/spainvisaapplication.html A couple sites about living costs in Spain (Some of the ones i found are comparing Spanish prices to English prices and im not sure where you are from so dont know how helpful they will be to you)> http://spain.othercountries.com/pages/articles/index.asp?page=cost-of-living http://www.paradorproperties.com/generalaccess/pages.aspx?pag_id=90 From what i see (and have heard about living there) it can be pretty expensive to rent somewhere in one of the more touristy locations like Madrid and Barcelona but you may be able to find somewhere if you look hard enough... Living on the outskirts of a city would probably be cheaper (but then you have to bear in mind your travel expenses to and from work etc). You didnt say what kind of work you would be looking for but just tap "job opportunites in Spain" into google and a lot of stuff comes up, you should be able to find it out yourself, add more detail like "mechanic job opportunies in spain" or whatever type of job you will be looking for to narrow it down. Hope this helps some, i'm hoping to go study at university next year in Spain! Good luck! =)

Hiya Suma. Your best chances to be honest with you will be on the Costa Del Sol. Malaga, Marbella, Torremelinos etc. etc. simply because this has the largest British Ex-Pat community in the world with well over 300,000 Brits living there. So therefore there are plenty of English speaking bars where you could get a job etc. My advice to you is what my cousin did. She went out there for a 2 week holiday to basically look around and job hunt. She was hired after the 1st week and therefore stayed there, had she not been able to get a job well then she would have just come back to England on her return flight and then try again when she had more money. It is my aim to move out to Spain but ill be going to somewhere in Cataluna hopefully which is why i am studying Spanish and Catalan before i move there but there is nothing wrong with your method of going out there but make sure at the very least.... you save yourself enough money for a plane ticket home!!! Good luck :-)
2 :
While living on the Costa del Sol MAY help you get a job - what with the high population of Brits there - living there WILL NOT help you learn Spanish - as you won't need it!!!! My recommendation to you is to consider Granada City. It's a good-sized city, very very Spanish (and you'll need to learn it to live there!) and much less expensive than Madrid and Barcelona. And you could dine alone on the famous free tapas in Granada too! Buy a 1.50 Euro beer and practically get a free meal! You'll quickly learn who offers the best/largest free tapas there. Now that's budget! You'll have good luck looking for a 3-month flat share in Granada too as the University there is teaming with international students (Americans and a few Brits) Getting any job in a non-Brit-City will be difficult with your limited Spanish. Plus, as you probably know, you'll earn a very low wage - and definitely not a living wage so bring some money along with you. All the best of luck to you though! Saludos, BarcelonaMan(.com)
3 :
I agree with Barcelonaman. You won't find yourself immersed enough to learn the language, if you go to a place that is chock full of English speakers. Sort of defeats the purpose, since that's what you are looking for. As for work...I know nothing, but the smaller the town, the less likely you will be to find tons of English speakers. Sevilla is great, Granada, Madrid, where you are likely to be able to find work. Ronda is really pretty, though I doubt there is much work to be had there. And any of the surrounding villages, well, there are lots of British "colonies" there. If you go to the North, you might find some good places. If you want a University atmosphere, and really easy to understand language, I suggest Salamanca. Santander is another really good town, and Oviedo has a university. Cádiz. Actually, anyplace in the South (Andalucía) you have to know that 1) it's really difficult to get a grip on the accent, and 2) once you have done so, you will be able to understand anyone from any Spanish speaking country. But the accent is a bit strange...I get comments often. That's where I learned how to speak, and when I went back, people thought I sounded like it.
4 :
this is not as easy as you might think - if you choose a Brit populated area you may never need to hear or speak Spanish at all - and choosing a Spanish populated area will mean that it would be very difficult to get a job - an up and coming area would be better - perhaps rather than working you could find an exchange program whereby you live with a Spanish family for a specific period of time - this way you need minimal cash and learn maximum Spanish.
5 :
if you want a climate similar to Britain ,go to Asturias ( Oviedo is a great city!!!), Galicia ,Cantabria or Euskadi ,byeee!

Will my debit card work in Spain?
I am going to Spain for a couple of weeks and was wondering if my debit card would work in the cashpoints over there. It is a VISA debit from HSBC. Has anyone used one of these in Europe?
Personal Finance - 5 Answers

1 :
Debit Cards made by Visa do work in most European ATMs. Just be sure to NOTIFY YOUR BANK that you will be leaving the country, or they may shut off your card after the first time you use it overseas. (It's a security function to prevent theft.) In that case, you would be very out of luck.
2 :
it should work in the ATMs and stores that accept Visa
3 :
Yes, your card works over seas.I have used my VISA card in Madrid with no problems at all.
4 :
Contact HSBC to let them know that you are travelling to Spain and will be using your card there. If you don't contact them, you run the risk of them putting a hold on your account the first time you try to use it overseas. It is not uncommon for an account to be frozen due to suspected fraud. You will not have any problems as long as you notify them ahead of time.
5 :
A visa debit issued by HSBC will be fine, but as a precaution you might just want to nip into your branch and let them know you will using it overseas in the next few weeks so they don't put a block on any transactions.

First of all contact the Spanish Embassy, the paperwork maybe horrendous for you..................you don't have automatic rights just because your husband has a residencia and work permit. I am english my husband is Spanish, I have lived here for 26 years, married fourteen years..............I still need residencia papers, although even they have now changed and I must catch up on the new papers required. You will most certainly need, copies of birth certificate, copies of passport (PLEASE NOTE, I SAY COPIES NOT COPY), possibly papers of proof you are a student, as for applying in the USA I do think you will have to apply for any paperwork regarding residencias once you have arrived in Spain, but I think you may need a entry visa first.... this is why I say contact the Spanish Embassy first. Hope this helps.

needs to be more than just proper frequencies to work. there is more than one technology that works with a sim card. i suggest seeing what technology spain uses and match it up... (most likely your phone will work, but you need to know a little bit more than frequencies here)

It should. My phone does. I travel all over the world and my phone works just fine. And it can use the 1800 frequency.

Can a U.S. Trained Medical Doctor go work in Spain for 6 months to a year with his/her license

Can a U.S. Trained Medical Doctor go work in Spain for 6 months to a year with his/her license?
After residency I was wondering if a doctor could pick up and leave to Spain and work there in a clinic and soak up a whole new culture for 6 months to a year or +

As a fellow or under training, possibly. As a stand-alone, just work for 6 months; no. (and the US license is not accepted everywhere on face value; you would have to fulfill Spain's requirements), and find some one who would train you & employ you for just 6 months or so (and give you all the time you wanted to travel off).
